Imagined Arctic Animal Prints

My 6-8 yrs Canadian Artful Adventures class studied the printmakers of the Arctic this week. We looked at Cape Dorset prints and some Northern Soapstone Sculptures for inspiration. We talked about some of the Inuit stories of Sedna the Sea Goddess and how she created the animals of the North for the Inuit People.

If you would like to browse some Inuit prints/sculpture-take a look at this website of the National Gallery

My students drew imagined Arctic Animals by combining two Arctic creatures inone. They used line for pattern and simplified the forms like the Inuit. We then transferred our drawings to styrofoam where we learned to ink up a brayer to ink up our styrofoam printing plate and then pulled our prints using a spoon for printing! They made some wonderful creations.
